Last week, we were hoping to see fall colors on our hike to Lost Lake, but we were a little too early. So, this weekend, we decided to try our luck again.

We hopped in the Jeep and headed over to Genoa Peak Road, a route we’ve been on several times, but we knew there were some aspen groves that, maybe, have changed to their signature golden hue.

We parked off to the side and ventured out into “the woods” so we could be engulfed by the color.

Dainty asters hanging on through the fall.

We gingerly removed all the burs from our socks and pant legs before getting back into the Jeep and continuing down the aspen-lined Genoa Peak Rd.

Our “final” destination on this outing would be a short hike up to Shakespeare Point, which overlooks Glenbrook, NV. So, we drove to the end of the forest road, parked the Jeep, and tried to find our way to the trail. It’s not a super well-defined path, so we ended up “getting lost” and had to regroup.

My directional instincts felt like we’d been heading in the opposite direction of Shakespeare Point, but I had never been on this trail, so I wasn’t exactly confident, either. My husband had done this short hike a few weeks prior when his sister and brother-in-law were visiting, but without a defined trail, it can be hard to know exactly where to go.

Sometimes what looks like “the trail” is actually a wildlife path that may or may not lead where you want it to. He realized we initially crossed the creek at the wrong spot, which is what threw off his overall direction and memory from last time.

We wandered up, over, and down the slippery pine needle-covered side slope terrain in the woods for a bit, eventually finding the remnants of the trail and were on our way.

Not a bad little Sunday outing in the fall in Tahoe.

  1. Great hike!

    1. Haha! Yes, one of our bigger hikes, for sure. At least the views were nice. One of the estates down in that Glenbrook area is for sale for $188M, if you’re interested.

I think I could manage that one and the view is great! Love the aspens in fall!

    1. Maybe the next time we hike to Shakespeare Point, we won’t get “lost.”
